A bright future for the Cultural Gardens and our the city

Change is happening in the City of Cleveland, as we kick off 2022 with a new mayor and several new City Council representatives. We at the Cultural Gardens hope to continue our strong bond with the administration and Council as we all work together to beautify and strengthen the Cultural Gardens. We also look forward to collaborating with partners to expand access to Rockefeller Park.

There are abundant reasons to be excited. First, the Gardens themselves. Several new and in-development Gardens, including the French, Pakistani, Colombian and Mexican Gardens, are working on design plans that we hope to see coming to fruition in 2022. Others are close to construction on new phases, most particularly the African American Garden. These activities will contribute to the Garden’s rich story of global cultural expression.

Secondly, the CCGF and the gardens are continuing to expand programs such as World on Stage and One World Day. World on Stage is a series of performing arts – music, dance, spoken word -at our Centennial Peace Plaza. And One World Day, our multicultural extravaganza with the Parade of Flags, a naturalization ceremony and music, dance, and ethnic food, will be even bigger than ever in 2022.

Lastly, the Gardens hope to keep building partnerships with schools and community groups so that we can share our many resources with others

A Call for Help…

Vintage postcard of the British Cultural Garden or how it was originally called Shakespeare Garden in 1916.

The British Cultural Garden could use some help.

Originally inaugurated by Leo Weidenthal, Shakespeare Garden was the seed that eventually led to the formation of the Cultural Gardens. Dedicated in 1916, the Shakespeare bust and the Shakespeare Garden (now the British Cultural Garden) were dedicated as part of a celebration that stretched across the world. Cities and nations located within Britain’s sphere of colonial influence, including its former colonies, erected monuments, planted gardens, and held celebrations commemorating the bard’s death.

Next year the Cultural Gardens Of Cleveland and The British Cultural Garden will celebrate their 100th year Anniversary!!!

The British Cultural Garden is preparing for it’s centennial and needs volunteers to help beautify it.
If you can kindly donate some time, please contact….

“Maslenitsa” winter festival in the Russian Garden

Rusgarden15winter-001
CCGF’s Svetlana Stolyarova helped to organize the event, first winter time celebration in the gardens.

On a snowy February Sunday, 2/21, the Russian community organized “Maslenitsa”, an outdoor winter festival featuring pancakes to eat, variety of hot teas to drink and winter games to have fun; tug-of-war, sack races, sledding and one-legged (you hold one leg up) wrestling contest. Over 200 people in attendance listened to Russian contemporary music. Several vendors were on hand, and above all the temperature came up to 28F and the sun was shining – that alone was a treat after week of zero degree temperatures!

The Russian community is working on their future garden but is also very active in organizing events such as this and the piano concert in the summer. The Federation appreciates their efforts!!! It is nice to see new group be active and promote the park as well as their own fundraising efforts: congratulations Svetlna Stolyarova and Dr. Boris Vinogradsky for a great event!
