Symbolism
The Greek Cultural Garden symbolizes The Gift of Greece to Civilization. This “Gift” stands as a pillar to uphold the teachings of Greece throughout its evolution and offers them to all mankind. The Garden’s presence in Cleveland signifies the many years of peace between the Hellenic Republic of Greece and the United States of America.
History & Special Attributes
Since its construction, the Greek Cultural Garden has been maintained and supported by Greeks throughout Northeastern, Ohio. It was officially dedicated on Sunday July 23, 1939, by the Grecian Garden Association. The dedication ceremony assembled over 2,000 people, amongst them were various local, national, and international dignitaries, including the Hon. Kimon Diamantopoulos, Greek Minister from Washington; His Excellency, Archbishop Athenagoras Spyrou, Head of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America; the Hon. Harold H. Burton, Mayor of Cleveland; the Hon. John W. Bricker, Governor of Ohio; and the Hon. Frank J. Lausche, Court Judge of Common Pleas in Cuyahoga County.
After WWII, the Garden experienced many waves of growth and decline. In 1994, the Hellenic Preservation Society (HPS) of Northeastern Ohio, became the Sponsoring Organization for the Garden, with Andrew Chakalis as President. Through his leadership, HPS undertook the Garden’s replanting and restoration, alongside the visionary Landscape Architect, Jim McKnight.
In 1996, the year of the City of Cleveland’s Bicentennial, HPS re-dedicated the Garden, officiated by the Hon. Michael R. White, Mayor of the City of Cleveland.
Over the next two decades, the Garden would host many ceremonies and celebrations, attended by Greek and Greek Orthodox dignitaries from the local diaspora and abroad.
Since 2023, the Greek Garden Association “GGA” of Cleveland remains the Garden’s Sponsoring Organization, driven by their mission: to spread the Gift of Greece to Civilization through the enhancement, conservation, and promotion of the Greek Cultural Garden, while upholding Hellenism, knowledge, and philotimo.
Design
The Greek Garden adopts elements found on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, including two doric columns one passes through at the Garden’s main entrance on East Boulevard.
Characterized as a Sunken Garden, the Central Court forms the lines of a Byzantine cross, connecting Greece’s ancient origins to its continued faith in Greek Orthodoxy.
The chief feature of the Garden is the Parthenon Wall, a Pylon inscribed with 34 historic Greek figures representing the Greek spirit in philosophy, art, literature, and science. These will include Socrates, Homer, Plato, El Greco, Aristotle, and Archimedes.
Commissioned by the Greek Garden Association of Cleveland, a 5’ x 15‘ frieze is to be executed in high-relief by Master Stonecarver, Nicholas Fairplay, and sit centered on the Wall.
From the Garden’s lower level on Martin Luther King Boulevard, two staircases ascend symmetrically behind the Parthenon Wall, evoking the similar climb experienced in Greece reaching the Parthenon. A Poet’s Bench is seated on this landing and is flanked with two watering vessels, symbolizing the arrival to clarity and refreshment.
Water Features
The reflecting pool in front of the Parthenon Wall represents the substance of life—water. In the Greek culture, self-awareness has always remained an important virtue. Reflecting pools have often carried this symbolism and other meanings of purity.
Plantings
The Garden is full of authentic, Greek-inspired vegetation, as well as vernacular alternatives. It is home to 89 tree varieties, including ginkgo, oak, maple, beech, and evergreen, along with approximately 7,500 plantings. The symmetrical beds are embellished with sage and myrtle, both having provenance in Greek history. On the western slope, spire oaks bordering the staircases take inspiration from the prevalent Cyprus trees in Greece’s landscape.
