History & Design:

This garden was established in 2014 by the American Lebanese Community Council, an organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Lebanese traditions. Its design guides visitors on a symbolic journey from the shores of ancient Phoenicia, the land along the eastern Mediterranean which corresponds to modern-day Lebanon, through the majestic cedar forests and up into Lebanon’s mountains. The cedar trees planted here and featured on the Lebanese flag represent strength, resilience and eternity.

Also featured is a reminder of the historic city of Byblos. Founded more than 7,000 years ago, Byblos is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Byblos is the birthplace of the Phoenician alphabet and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lebanese people began arriving in Cleveland in the 1870s, establishing a vibrant community that still enriches Northeast Ohio with its traditions, art, food and spirit. This garden is a testament to the community’s contributions and adds a vital piece of Middle Eastern and Arab heritage to the diverse tapestry of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.
